The newly sworn-in council of Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality officially elected its Political Leadership on Tuesday, 23 November 2021. Councillor Khumalo Molefe was elected Executive Mayor, Councillor Nthabiseng Shuping was elected Speaker of Council, and Councillor Crosby Maema was elected to the Whip.
Forty one of the forty-two Councillors representing five parties were sworn in by Chief Magistrate Kobuwe. The parties represented in council are the African National Congress (ANC), the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the Forum 4 Service Delivery (F4SD), the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Vryheid Front (VF). Present during the meetings were members of the public and invited guests.
In his acceptance speech, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Molefe said his focus is on water and sanitation and to that end, he planned to visit the Mmabatho Water Treatment plant on his first day on duty and that was Wednesday 24 November 2021.
“I am a resident of Mahikeng, I know the dynamics of the district. I have been within different spheres of government, was once a shop steward, and I am very passionate about service delivery. I have noted with great concern the weaknesses of the district municipality, familiarised myself with all the Annual Reports of Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality. I am ready to lead, I am ready to sort out service delivery. I’ve been entrusted by my Political Party the ANC to lead and guide, and I plan not to disappoint”, committed the Executive Mayor as he accepted the election.
The Executive Mayor further committed to study a research report indicating that there is enough underground water in both Molopo Eye, outside Mahikeng and Dinokana in Lehurutshe which can last for more than fifty years.
On the same breath, the management of the district municipality welcomes the newly elected political leadership and looks forward to a development focused partnership to accelerate service delivery within the district.
